Kick off for 2011

The Auckland Region will really come alive in 2011
That is, of course, the year of the Rugby World Cup and in hosting the opening match as well as pool games, the bronze medal play-off, semis and the final, Auckland will be on show to the world.
Like most Kiwis, I am a passionate rugby fan. But this tournament is about more than just what happens on the patch of grass at Eden Park. "Mega Events" like a rugby world cup are major economic drivers. The Louis Vuitton yacht racing series held on the Waitemata Harbour earlier this year generated $16 million of extra spend into the regional economy. So the Rugby World Cup will be massive.
Large-scale events are also the catalyst for developments and infrastructure improvements that might not have happened otherwise. A redeveloped waterfront, new roads and upgraded public transport are just some of the projects underway to prepare Auckland for 2011, with much more to come. One example is the multi-million dollar upgrade of the Morningside Railway Station, which was brought forward because of the Cup.
The question for business is: "How do I get a slice of the action" and "how do we make sure that the economic benefits are felt beyond Queen Street?"
A good staring point is a new on-line "Business Opportunities Guide," which aims to provide pointers on what might be available. Go to www.auckland2011.com/business

It is not just about big business or large contracts. The guide includes information for small-to-medium enterprises interested in accessing the supply chains related to the Cup.
There is also information on things like expected visitor numbers, training courses and skill development opportunities (for example in the security and hospitality industries).
2011 is not that far away and the Rugby World Cup is clearly a business opportunity not to be missed. Whilst we all have had concerns about the large financial input required from the ratepayers, it is clear that wise investment of this money in infrastructure and upgrading our facilities will benefit us all and provide opportunities for business.
And while we're at it, let's hope the All Blacks make the most of things too!
